What Is The Stand Of Turkey In NATO?
North Atlantic Treaty Organization commonly known as NATO is one of the most prominent and influential organizations that is composed of 29 members states that aims for the purpose of defending each other from any possibility of the communist Soviet Union taking control of their respective nation.
Now one of the very critical issues that has been dealt with in NATO lately is the issue with Turkey, as the members are now on the verge of deciding if this country is a tolerable ally for their cause or not, as there are actions made by Turkey that jeopardize other state leader’s actions because of the behavior of one of their member.
One significant reason of this is the fact that Turkey had long been occupying almost 1/3 of the country Cyprus, and with Cyprus now being part of the European Union, it will be hard for members of both EU and NATO to implement rules against such as Turkey, being one of their members is occupying another member’s territory making it more awkward in a sense.
Another factor that is raising an issue especially with the United States is the fact that the US President cannot condemn the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin for setting up states in other countries not their own, as it is also the what Turkey is doing here.
Another aspect that raised concern is the allegations that raised many attention from all political views that the political leaders of Turkey have instead a form of allegiance in a discreet manner with ISIS being that they are keen about delaying measures to weaken the terrorist organization and they have limited support to airstrikes against ISIS and gives little assistance to those that want to thwart the group.
Another troubling matter is the authoritarianism in Turkey’s domestic affairs as those that are known to be against the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an is either arrested or unjustly treated and captured, and there was also a round of news that President Erdo?an had manipulated the media in all aspect to drive his own agenda.
In this political regime, such issue is the most controversial one and that is continuously raising great concerns from both the EU and NATO with the considerations of keeping Turkey to be still one of its members or be ousted for reasons that bear the objectives of the organization.
Turkey is one of those noted countries that have been noted to have unscrupulous behavior and further actions are in place as it is imperative that these objectives must and by all means be in connection as well to the values of the organization’s commitment to democracy and human rights, otherwise, it will create a more grave and heightened political issue and crisis and may impede the goals and aspirations of the organization to defend each other.
